I Went To... — Simple Past Irregular Verbs

Lesson 26 of 170 · Level 2 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning simple past irregular verbs: you will read the scene it happens in, take apart the pattern behind them (subject + past verb (irregular)), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

A Brooklyn diner at 8:30am. Pancakes, bacon, bottomless coffee. You're telling a friend about yesterday. The past tense unlocks storytelling — and in English, the most common verbs are irregular.

The Brooklyn Diner — Saturday Morning

Last Saturday, I went to a diner in Brooklyn. It was on a quiet street in Park Slope, near Prospect Park. I got there at 8:30 in the morning. The diner was already busy — families, couples reading newspapers, a man with a dog sitting outside.

I sat at the counter and ordered the special: blueberry pancakes, bacon, and bottomless coffee. The waitress brought my coffee first. It was strong and hot. I drank two cups before my food even came.

The pancakes were incredible. I ate everything on my plate. The bacon was crispy, the way I like it. I had a third cup of coffee and just watched the morning happen around me.

When I left, the sun was out and Brooklyn felt like a small town inside a big city. I thought: I could do this every Saturday.
