The Place That Never Closes — Relative Clauses with Who/That/Which

Lesson 77 of 170 · Level 3 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning relative clauses with who/that/which: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (defining relative clauses: who, that, which), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

Veselka, East Village, 3 am on a weeknight

Three AM at Veselka

Veselka is the kind of place that never sleeps. It's a Ukrainian diner in the East Village that has been open 24/7 for decades. The people who come here at three in the morning are a mix of everyone: students who just left the library, musicians who just finished a gig, couples who can't sleep.

I'm sitting in a booth near the window. The waiter who takes my order doesn't blink at the hour. This is normal here. I order the borscht, which is their most famous dish, and a plate of pierogies that come stuffed with potato and cheese.

The man in the booth next to me is a regular who comes here every night. He's reading a book and eating a plate of blintzes. The woman behind the counter, who has worked here for fifteen years, knows his order by heart.

The borscht arrives — deep red, steaming, perfect. This is the soup that has warmed a million New Yorkers on cold nights. The diner that never closes feeds the city that never sleeps.
