Reading and writing restaurant reviews on Yelp and Google
My friend wanted to try a new ramen shop in the East Village. She checked the reviews online. It had a 4.2 rating on Google with mixed reviews. Some people said it was better than any ramen in the city. Others said the broth was worse than instant noodles.
We decided to go anyway. The line was long -- about thirty minutes. I read more reviews while we waited. One said, 'Don't believe the hype.' Another said, 'This place exceeded my expectations.' Hard to know who to trust.
When we finally got our ramen, it was... fine. Not bad, but not amazing. The noodles were better than average, but the broth was less flavorful than I expected. My friend said, 'I'm a little disappointed. The reviews made it sound better than it is.'
I left a review: 'Good noodles, average broth. Better than fast food, worse than the best ramen spots. Not sure it lives up to the hype, but worth trying once. 3.5 stars.' Sometimes the best restaurant experiences come from places you discover yourself -- not from reviews.
