You are learning reported commands and requests: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (reported commands and requests: told/asked + object + to-infinitive), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.
Carbone, Greenwich Village, dinner reservation
Getting a reservation at Carbone is almost impossible. My friend Rosa advised me to book two months in advance. She told me to call right when the line opened. She also asked me not to be late — they give away your table after fifteen minutes.
The night arrives. The host tells us to follow him to our booth. The restaurant looks like a 1950s Italian-American supper club. The waiter, who introduces himself as Michael, asks us to take our time with the menu but tells us the spicy rigatoni is a must.
Rosa tells me to order the veal parmesan too. Michael asks us not to skip the tableside Caesar salad. The food arrives and every dish is enormous. The rigatoni is creamy, spicy, and unforgettable. Michael told us to save room for dessert, but we've already eaten too much.
At the end, Rosa asks me to promise to come back. I tell her I'll try, but Carbone told me my next reservation wouldn't be for two months. She tells me to book it tonight. I pull out my phone and do it.
