The scene

Peter Luger Steak House, Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Friday dinner

Friday Night at Peter Luger

Peter Luger Steak House has been open since 1887. It's the oldest steakhouse in Brooklyn, and many people say it's the best steakhouse they've ever been to. The restaurant is no-frills: wooden tables, harsh lighting, waiters who don't smile much. But nobody comes here for the atmosphere.

I've waited two months for this reservation. My friend Sarah has been here five times and she's told me the porterhouse for two is the only thing to order. 'It's the most perfectly cooked steak I've ever had,' she said.

The steak arrives on a sizzling plate. The waiter slices it tableside. The meat is dark on the outside, pink and juicy inside. I take my first bite. It's the most tender, flavorful piece of beef I've ever tasted in my life.

Sarah watches me and grins. 'Told you.' The bill is steep — this is the most expensive meal I've ever had — but it's worth every penny. Some things you just have to experience.
