I Prefer... — Preferences

Lesson 31 of 170 · Level 2 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning preferences: you will read the scene it happens in, take apart the pattern behind them (i prefer / i'd rather / i like... better), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

Comparing pizza places in NYC. You've tried several — now you have preferences. "I prefer," "I'd rather," and "I like... better" let you express what you want and why.

The Pizza Debate Begins

I've been in New York for three weeks now, and I've already tried five pizza places. I have opinions.

I prefer thin crust to thick crust — hands down. There's something about a New York slice: thin, foldable, crispy on the bottom. That's more my style than a heavy deep-dish situation.

My go-to is Joe's Pizza in Greenwich Village. Plain cheese. Nothing fancy. Just a perfect slice for $3.50. I'm more of a simple pizza person — I don't need twelve toppings.

My roommate prefers Lucali in Carroll Gardens. She says the margherita there is life-changing. She likes Neapolitan-style better than the classic New York slice. That's not really my thing, but I respect it.

I tried Di Fara Pizza in Brooklyn last weekend. It was incredible. The old man made every single pizza himself. Now I have a new contender. The pizza debate in this city never ends.
