I Think... — Opinions

Lesson 32 of 170 · Level 2 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning opinions: you will read the scene it happens in, take apart the pattern behind them (opinion phrases + agreeing/disagreeing), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

The great debate: New York pizza vs. Chicago deep dish. Americans are passionate about this. You'll learn to state, defend, and soften your opinions — a skill you need for every conversation.

The Great Pizza Debate — NY vs. Chicago

My coworker Jake is from Chicago. We have this argument every Friday at lunch.

"I think Chicago deep dish is the greatest pizza ever made," Jake said, holding up his phone with a photo of a thick, cheesy pie from Lou Malnati's.

"I see your point — it looks amazing," I said. "But honestly, I don't think deep dish is real pizza. It's a casserole. A delicious casserole, but still."

"You have a point about the casserole thing," Jake admitted. "But the thing is, the flavor is incredible. The cheese, the sauce, the crust..."

"For me, pizza needs to be thin, foldable, and eaten on the street. There's no question — New York style wins."

"I feel like it depends on your mood," Jake said. "Sometimes you want a slice. Sometimes you want a deep dish experience."

We never agree. But we always enjoy the debate. That's the American way.
