The C1 Table — Assessment and Reflection

Lesson 145 of 170 · Level 5 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning assessment and reflection: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (metalinguistic reflection: talking about language itself), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

One World Observatory, One World Trade Center, 102nd floor — looking over all of New York

The View from the 102nd Floor

From the 102nd floor of One World Trade Center, all of New York is visible. The bridges, the boroughs, the river, the ocean. Every neighborhood I have studied, every restaurant I have visited, every conversation I have had in English — it is all down there, connected.

When I arrived in this city, I communicated in survival English. I ordered coffee with gestures. I rehearsed sentences before making phone calls. My relationship with English was transactional — I used it to get things done, nothing more.

Now, standing here, I can feel how the language has changed inside me. I don't just use English anymore — I think in it. I argue in it. I dream in it. I have learned to nominalize for academic papers, to invert for emphasis, to hedge when uncertain and boost when sure. I can write memoir in narrative present and deliver a keynote with anaphora. I know when to use the passive and when to own the active. I understand that fluency is not how fast I speak — it is how precisely I choose.

The view from up here is not just of a city. It is of a journey. Twenty-five lessons. Five units. One language that is now, unmistakably, mine.
