Which Do You Like Better? — Asking Preferences

Lesson 33 of 170 · Level 2 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning asking preferences: you will read the scene it happens in, take apart the pattern behind them (questions about preferences), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

A craft beer tasting in Brooklyn. You're trying different beers, asking which ones people prefer, and discovering what makes a good conversation about taste and choice.

Brooklyn Beer Tasting — Saturday Afternoon

My friend Sarah took me to a craft brewery in Williamsburg last Saturday. I'm not a beer expert, so I asked the bartender: "What do you recommend for someone who doesn't like bitter beer?"

"Are you more of a light beer or dark beer person?" she asked.

"Light, I think. Something smooth."

She poured me a sample of a wheat beer. "Try this. It's crisp, not too hoppy."

I loved it. Sarah ordered a flight — four small glasses of different IPAs. "Which do you like better?" I asked her, pointing at the glasses.

"This one," she said, holding up a hazy IPA. "It's smooth but still strong."

We sat at a long wooden table near the window. The brewery was in an old warehouse — exposed brick, industrial lights. Very Brooklyn.

"Cheers," Sarah said. "To trying new things."

"Cheers. What's your favorite brewery in the city?"

She smiled. "This one. Hands down."
