Check Please — Paying the Bill

Lesson 9 of 170 · Level 1 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning paying the bill: you will read the scene it happens in, take apart the pattern behind them (bill + departure vocabulary), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

At any NYC restaurant. Asking for the bill, understanding the American check system, tipping correctly, and leaving with the phrase that makes a great last impression.

Han Dynasty — The Check

The check arrives without being asked — an American custom that can feel abrupt if you're from a culture where the server waits to be called. It means nothing; they're not rushing you. You can stay as long as you like. The check is just available.

Marcus picks it up. "I've got this."

"No, please — I insist. You paid last time," the stranger says.

"You're a guest in the city. Next time."

The stranger accepts. He signals their server: "The food was absolutely incredible — please tell the chef. We'll definitely be back."

The server — who has been serving tables for four hours and has heard variations of this exchange all evening — smiles a genuine smile. "That means a lot. Enjoy your night."
