The scene

Dominique Ansel Bakery, SoHo, afternoon

The Cronut I Almost Missed

In 2013, Dominique Ansel created the Cronut — a half-croissant, half-donut pastry that became a worldwide phenomenon. People stood in line for hours. Some waited since four in the morning. I wish I had been in New York that year. I wish I had experienced the madness.

Today, I finally make it to the bakery in SoHo. There's no crazy line anymore, but the Cronut is still on the menu. The flavor changes monthly — this month is passion fruit. I order one and a cookie shot, which is a chocolate chip cookie shaped like a shot glass filled with milk.

The Cronut is flaky, creamy, and unlike anything I've ever tasted. I wish I had come here sooner. I wish I could eat three more without feeling sick. The woman next to me says she wishes she had tried the frozen s'more too, but they've already sold out.

I sit outside on the SoHo sidewalk and think about how many pastries I've missed by not coming here earlier. I wish I lived in this neighborhood. But at least I'm here now, and I wish every afternoon could be like this.
