Better Than / Worse Than — Irregular Comparisons

Lesson 43 of 170 · Level 2 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning irregular comparisons: you will read the scene it happens in, take apart the pattern behind them (irregular comparative forms), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

Writing restaurant reviews. You need to say what was better, what was worse, and what was the best value. Irregular comparatives — better, worse, less, more — are the backbone of every review.

Writing My First NYC Food Review

I decided to write a review of a new restaurant in the East Village. Here it is:

Better than expected. I went in with low expectations — the reviews online were mixed. But the food was much better than I thought.

The highlight was the lamb burger. Better than any burger I've had in Manhattan. The fries were good but could be better — they needed more salt.

The downside? The service was worse than other places at this price point. Our waiter forgot our drinks, and the wait was longer than expected — thirty minutes for a burger.

The value for money was decent. Not the cheapest, but better value than most places in the neighborhood.

Would I recommend it? Yes. The more I think about that burger, the more I want to go back. Just be patient with the service.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
