You are learning reported questions: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (reported questions: if/whether + statement word order), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.
Levain Bakery, Upper West Side, morning
My roommate asked me if I had ever been to Levain Bakery. I told her I hadn't. She asked whether I liked chocolate chip cookies. Of course I did. She wanted to know if I was free on Saturday morning, and just like that we had a plan.
We arrived at ten and there was already a line. The woman behind us asked if we knew how long the wait usually was. We told her we weren't sure. She asked whether the cookies were really as good as everyone said. My roommate said they absolutely were.
When we got inside, the baker asked what flavor we wanted. I asked him which one he recommended. He said the chocolate chip walnut was their most popular. My roommate asked if they had just come out of the oven. He smiled and said a fresh batch had come out five minutes ago.
We split one cookie. It was warm, gooey, and enormous. I asked my roommate why she hadn't brought me here sooner. She laughed and asked if I finally understood the hype. I did.
