Lesson 110 of 170 · Level 4 of 6All lessons
In this lesson

You are learning networking english: you will read the scene it happens in, learn 10 words and phrases, take apart the pattern behind them (networking language: introductions, small talk, and follow-up), hear them in a conversation, rehearse them, and finish by saying one thing out loud to be graded.

The scene

A rooftop cocktail reception at the Eataly Flatiron opening event

Working the Room at Eataly

The rooftop at Eataly Flatiron is packed. It's a launch event for a new Italian olive oil brand, and the guest list includes chefs, food writers, importers, and people who just love to eat. I know exactly three people here. Time to mingle.

I approach the bar and order a Negroni. The woman next to me is doing the same. 'Great minds,' I say. She laughs. 'I'm Elena. I run a food newsletter.' I introduce myself. 'What brings you to tonight's event?' I ask. 'I'm covering it,' she says. 'I'm always looking for interesting food stories.' Perfect opening.

'How did you get into food media?' I ask. She tells me about her years as a restaurant cook, her transition to writing, her newsletter that now has fifty thousand subscribers. 'I'd love to pick your brain sometime about food content,' I say. 'I'm working on a language-learning platform that uses food and culture.' She's intrigued.

We exchange cards. 'I'll follow up by email tomorrow,' I say. 'It was really great meeting you, Elena.' She smiles. 'Likewise. Send me that email — I mean it.' I walk away with one new contact and a genuine connection. That's what networking looks like when it's done right: two people, honest curiosity, and a Negroni.
